Why is my boiler losing pressure?

Every boiler has a "pressure" system to push the water out of the boiler and distribute it in pipes and radiators throughout your house. Therefore, maintaining pressure is crucial to keep your boiler running efficiently and for getting efficient heating and hot water.

What causes a boiler to lose pressure?

A low boiler pressure indicates that there is not enough force to push the water through the system for heating.

Many factors can cause your boiler to gradually lose pressure, such as lack of annual boiler servicing and regular maintenance, bleeding of radiators, and leaks. Similarly, there are many ways to fix this issue, depending on the type of boiler you have.

What do I do if my boiler is losing pressure?

One of the best ways to improve your boiler's water pressure is by re-pressurising the heating system. You can re-pressurise the system yourself. However, you must check your boiler's user manual to see if the brand/model permits it.

Once you’ve checked your manual to see if the manufacturer allows it, follow the steps below.

1. First, switch off your boiler to cool down the system.

2. Locate the boiler's filling loop and ensure it is appropriately fitted at both ends. A filling loop is a flexible metal pipe in modern combi boilers that connects the system with the primary water supply. Depending on the model of your boiler, the filling loop could be located inside or outside the system.

3. After ensuring that the filling loop is securely fitted, use a screwdriver to open the valves at both edges. This action will allow the water to flow into the system.

4. The boiler pressure will start to rise as the water flows into the system. Close the filling loop valves when the pressure gauge needle reaches 1.5, or see the user manual for the manufacturer's suggestions.

5. As the process is completed, you can switch on your boiler. Remember to check the pressure gauge to ensure the system is running smoothly.

Note: If your boiler is still losing pressure even after you have re-pressured it, it's best to contact a Gas Safe registered engineer to check your system.
